Pond Supplies FAQs
If you plan to have fish in your pond now or in the near future, then yes, filtration is necessary to keep your pond healthy and your water quality at a proper level and clear. Good quality filters are often easy to maintain, low effort, and are less expensive than you might think. However, a factor to consider regarding proper filtration is if your pump and filter are the right fit and size for your pond.
Having an ill-fitting filter and pump may be detrimental to your pond ecosystem as it provides oxygen and proper circulation. They should be properly sized to the specifications of your pond, and your pump should ideally be circulating the volume of your pond at least once every other hour.

If you have fish, then you should stop feeding them once the water temperature drops to below 10°C. You must also keep a small hole open in the water using a de-icer or aerator, routinely check and remove tree leaves and debris from the top and bottom of your pond, and consider composting or bringing inside any tropical plants you have in your pond.
Yes. This goes for home or property owners who do not have fish in their ponds and want to have beautiful flowers and plants during the spring and summer times. As fish waste is a natural fertilizer, most plants obtain the nutrients they need to survive in a fish-inhabited pond. However, big flowers and plants such as water lilies and tropical plants will need regular fertilizing to remain lush and healthy.
